The most populous, 355,500, and one of the most prosperous boroughs in London, Barnet is a success story for others to follow. Such success has driven this North West London borough to grow at one of the fastest rates in the country. Excellent performing schools, a low crime rate and large open spaces have attracted the middle classes in droves. To add more good news, there are plans for £2 billion in regeneration for town centres and run down estates.

If you are hoping for affordable housing then you may find them in short supply in most parts of Barnet. Population growth due to a desire to live here has driven prices to a very high level. As usual, lower prices can only be found on generally less than desirable locations.

Prices are highest in the Hamstead Garden Suburb, home to some 13,000 people, with many millionaires attracted to the leafy streets and tight planning laws. East Finchley and Golders Green also offer attractive surroundings with prices to match. Barnet, formerly of Hertfordshire, but gobbled up by London's sprawl, remains cheaper though relatively expensive given it's distance from Central London.

Expect to find lower rental and property prices in Edgware, Western Barnet, and Hendon which is South East of Finchley.
