Area Guide to Camden

A multi-cultural and densely populated borough situated in central and north London, spanning from Holborn in the south, to Hamstead Heath in the north. The neighbouring boroughs are Westminster and the City of London to the south, Brent to the west, Barnet and Haringey to the north, and Islington to the east. Home to 198,000 people of which 73% are white, 13% Asian and over 10% Black African and Afro-Caribbean, there is also a sizable Irish and Jewish community.

Camden is an example of the contrasts usually seen in major world cities. Wealthy areas such as Regents Park and Fitzrovia, give way to hideous council estate slums and poor town areas like Kings Cross. Help is on the way with some much needed regeneration at the Kings Cross St Pancras train station, with planned investment for shops, hotels and office space in the general area.

High earners have many places to choose from. Centrally located Holborn and Bloomsbury, Primrose Hill and Belsize park, but the favourite choice has to be the beautiful Hamstead, with it's village like feel and stylish homes.

Expect to find slums in parts of the south of the borough. Kentish Town looks like a dive and generally is, but not at an affordable price. Kings Cross retains it's title as the worst place in the borough, though the inward investment may drag it off the bottom.

Camden Town deserves a mention, mainly due to the busy well known market which is now open throughout the week, though not all stalls are open until the weekend. Housing is a bit of a mix with some nice Georgian homes, but there's always a council estate just around the corner.
