Cheshire, in north-west England, is made up of six sub regions and stretches from Ellesmere Port in the west to Macclesfield in the east. The county has a population of almost 674,000 according to the 2001 census, with most of it's inhabitants classified as white. With a history of some 4000 years, Cheshire could be described as one of the more beautiful areas of the north-west, in comparison to it's more working class industrial neighbours. Plenty of green open space, leafy suburbs and historic buildings can be found in this county. The less industrial feel has attracted the wealthy of the north-west, and many of the areas top football players and famous people have decided to reside here. Beautiful large homes can be found in places like Alderley Edge and Knutsford, while many others towns like Chester with it's 17th century black and white architecture, offer a pleasant standard of living with a decent housing stock. Being home to one of Europe's biggest oil refineries, and a Vauxhall car plant, Ellesmere Port is the industrial side of Cheshire. More of a working class area with more terraced and poorer quality homes with the usual council estates never far away. Merseyside is probably best known for it's famous main city, Liverpool. The county is home to a lofty 1.36 million people, according to the 2001 census, though the population is down by some 76000 from the 1991 census. Population declines may now be levelling off due to a surge in economic activity brought on by Liverpool being the European capital of culture 2008. The much needed investment has propelled Merseyside into being the fastest growing region in the UK. Despite the positive recent investment, the county remains riddled with poverty and slum council housing. Unemployment is still higher than the national average, and property prices remain lower than most regions to reflect this. Use of this website and information available from it, is subject to our
