Area Guide to Croydon

One of the largest and one of the most populous boroughs in London with a population of 330,500, Croydon is situated in South London and in parts more akin to Surrey than London.

Bordered by Sutton and Merton in the west, Lambeth to the north, and Bromley to the east, Croydon serves as a commuter belt to central London's workers who prefer more space but who still want to be close to the action. Southern parts of the borough also benefit from links to other parts of southern England, including ports like Dover.

Due to the outer status of Croydon, property prices do tend to be much cheaper than other London boroughs, and there are bargains to be had, well by London standards anyway!

The borough has many large detached properties which can be found in parts of Selsdon, Purley and Croydon it's self. Many properties date back to the 1920-30's period and offer excellent value, though expect to pay very high prices for property to the west of Purley.

Croydon has taken some stick in the media, especially for it's badly designed buildings and high rise offices. Most of the housing was built before that era, with many of the usual council estates to scare people away. Areas like Upper Norwood offer the usual inner city dives, while Thornton Heath has a decent mix depending on your income.
