Area Guide to DevonFor lettings in Devon please use the menu above. Devon is one of the largest counties in England in terms of area size, and has a population of just over 700,000. It's population is made up of generally older people in comparison to other English counties, with more people in the 50-54 age bracket than any other age range. This is explained by Devon's ability to attract retired people, mainly for it's slower pace of life and milder climate. With it's stunning scenery, green open spaces and beautiful beaches, Devon is probably the nicest county in England, with a fast growing population proving it's desirability. South Devon tends to have a softer appearance with rolling hills and beautiful beaches, with palm trees giving a warmer slightly more continental feel. The south of the county is also home to the bigger cities like Exeter and of course Plymouth, the biggest city on the south coast. North Devon has a slightly harsher appearance with a rocky coastline, though many of the beaches are sandy. The north coast is also a favourite destination for those who choose to holiday at home, though some are put off by the the cool and windy climate. Housing tends to be quite modern in many parts of Devon, though the towns and cities contain some Victorian terraces. The Roman city of Exeter offers Victorian terraces and some Georgian buildings in the central area, but has many large detached homes on the outskirts. Expect high prices as Exeter has seen it's property prices rise at a faster rate than any other city in recent times. East Devon has some of the best properties in the region, with stunning homes in West Hill, and many detached modern homes to be found in Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth and Sidmouth. Despite all the praise, Devon does have pockets of poverty and does in fact have a lower average wage than most parts of the country. The usual split between classes can be found in Plymouth, with many council estate slums and generally less well maintained properties. Torquay has a few scruffy council estates, but mainly around the edges near Newton Abbot. Use of this website and information available from it, is subject to our
