Area Guide to Islington

For lettings in Islington, please use the menu above.

Located just north of the City of London, bordered by Camden to the west, Haringey to the north and Hackney to the east, Islington is one of the smaller London boroughs in size and population, with 176,000 inhabitants. Ethnic minorities represent around 25% of the population of Islington, which has risen in recent years due to an increase in asylum.

Around 30 years ago, Islington was the poorest borough in London with very little hope, and no real style. Today it is one of the most talked about places in London, with trendy bars and shops to match the attractive renovated town houses. In fact the borough has more Georgian houses than anywhere else in the capital. Despite all the hype though, the borough is extremely deprived in parts with over 50% of it's residents living in council housing, and high levels of poverty to match.

For those with deep pockets, Barnsbury, Tony Blair's former residence, is full of beautiful Georgian town houses set in quiet squares. Canonbury and Islington itself offer fairly decent properties with a high price tag. Better value can be found in Highbury, though properties there do tend me be smaller and less grand in design.

For those on a lower budget, or no budget at all, there are a few rough areas to choose from, mainly Finsbury with it's concrete tower blocks, and areas close to Kings Cross which is partially in the borough of Islington.
