The London Borough of Merton has the usual mix of affluence and deprivation, though levels of poverty remain relatively low. Despite areas of deprivation in Southern and Eastern parts of the borough, Merton has generally low levels of crime.

Merton has a population of just under 200,000 with 75% of the poulation being white and 25% of ethnic minorities. The borough has a significant South Asian community of around 11% of the population.

The North and Western areas of Merton tend to be the most prosperous, especially around Wimbledon. South and Eastern areas are generally more deprived with a plentiful supply of council housing, though many suburban semis also dominate around Mordenand Mitcham.
