The West Midlands area has a massive population of just under 5.3 million, with Birmingham being home to some 977,000 people. The East Midlands region also has a large population of almost 4.2 million people. This vast population is mainly white though there are many Asian communities in the West Midlands, with Leicester in the East Midlands having the biggest Indian population in the UK, representing some 25% of the cities total population.

The West Midlands is known for it's industrial past, and still suffers some scars today with some rather dreadful derelict buildings, mainly in the Birmingham area. Birmingham has suffered from it's obsession in the 1960's with concrete, as can be seen at 'Spaghetti Junction', and with a mass of tower blocks blotted around the landscape of the City. It's not all bad, in fact the city may have turned the corner in the last few years with the opening of the Bull Ring shopping centre, and many other efforts to improve the city centre without the use of concrete.

Just to the south and south-west of Birmingham is the beautiful Cotswolds. With stunning countryside and buildings made from Cotswold stone, the Cotswolds feel a million miles away from it's built up neighbour.

With a slightly less industrial feel, the East Midlands has two notable main cities, Nottingham and Leicester. Nottingham has seen some regeneration of it's city centre in the last decade or so through a big investment from pub and club operators. The city is also a great place for shopaholics and those looking for fine cuisine. The east of the region has a more rural feel as you head into Lincolnshire, which also has a coastline. The most well known coastal resort in Lincolnshire must be Skegness, though it's not well known for warm climate.
