Area Guide to WalesFor lettings in Wales, please use the menu above. A relatively sparsely populated country with 2.9 million citizens residing here, of which most live in it's major towns and cities in the south. Other residential areas can be found in some of it's many valley's, though many hilly and rocky areas of sparsely populated. Wales is a rather beautiful country with rolling green hills and peaceful valleys. Cardiff, with a population of just over 300,000 has more to offer than any other town or city in Wales. Being the capital, and with it's relatively close proximity to England, Cardiff has enjoyed more investment and has pushed away from it's more industrial past to a more service sector economy. In contrast, many parts of Wales have failed to face up to the fact that major industries like coal mining are a thing of the past. Their failure to move on to the modern world has lead to mass poverty and deprivation, and resentment of their English neighbours. Property prices are predictably highest in and around Cardiff where the average price of a detached home is just under £300,000, almost double that of Newport. A couple of other places deserve a mention. Monmouth is a rather attractive town with properties to match. Further down from Monmouth on the border with England is Chepstow. A rather cosy town where many new detached properties can be found especially near the famous racecourse. Expect to pay more due to it's location to England. Unfortunately, Wales has many poor areas with a mass of run down properties. Newport and Swansea are the biggest culprits for poor housing and mass council estate slums. The only positive news is that Wales tends to have less concrete tower blocks than it's neighbour to the east. Many towns in the valleys have a rather grim feel, with cramped terraced housing the order of the day. Relatively high unemployment and a lack of investment prevents a change to more modern housing.
